Experience:No experience is required to join a Boy Scout Troop. Our best recruiters are the boys themselves. Many boys are drawn to Scouting because they hear about the fun and adventure from a friend who is a Scout The District usually sponsors a recruiting night at the local elementary and middle schools to inform anyone interested in the merits of Scouting. Many boys who were part of Cub Scouting will seek a Troop after their second year of being a Webelos. Therefore, Troop 401 welcomes parents and boys from local Webelos dens to join us for an outing or an event to see first hand how our Troop functions. Going on a weekend event and attending a few weekly meetings will usually provide enough information for the Webelos to decide if this is the Troop they want to join. Forms:All boys from ages 11 through 18 are eligible to join at any time during the year. Troop 401 begins it's charter year in April. New Scouts must register with proper forms and fees that are forwarded to the local council service center. Likewise, Scouts may transfer from another Troop by filing Transfer Forms and providing information about advancement, leadership positions, and registration dates. Fees may be prorated based on the Troop's charter year. Troop 401 begins it's charter year every April. The Scoutmaster or another adult leader will provide proper forms for anyone interested in joining the Troop. Conferences:After joining a new Troop is usually a good time for Troop leaders to sit down with parents and Scouts to learn about each other. This will help the boy and the parents feel more at ease. During conferences we try to learn about the boy's hobbies and leisure activities. It also provides an excellent opportunity to check for proper forms, health records, etc. and to explain the normal procedures of the Troop. Conferences are perhaps even more valuable for the parents. It is common for parents to have many questions and this is an excellent opportunity to discuss many things such as the the time and money commitment that may be involved. This is a good time for parents to get a copy of the Parent's Handbook as well as the Troop Calendar and other literature. It is also an excellent time for the parents to share what resources they may contribute to the Scouting program (transportation, refreshments, merit badge training etc.). |
