Why do service projects: A major aim of Scouting is to help the boys develop a better understanding of citizenship. As part of helping the boys grow in citizenship we encourage them to help others. Of course the goal is to make this such a common practice that it becomes part of their daily lives but to emphasize the importance we also plan several events every year for the specific purpose of doing service for the community. What we do: Troop 401 has adopted a trail in the Red River Gorge known as Rough Trail. Every spring, the troop hikes into the gorge and spends a weekend cleaning up the trail and making it a better place for others to hike and enjoy the beauty of some of Kentucky's back-country. Typically the troop schedules a waterway cleanup as well. Sometimes we combine a canoe trip down the Red River with a cleanup of the river bank as we go. On other trips we may provide cleanup along the banks of the Kentucky River or the shores of Lake Cumberland. Many other types of service projects are undertaken. A list of just some of them include gathering food for the needy, collecting toys for children, volunteering to assist in the Mid-Summer Night's Run, and helping our parks and recreation services in Kentucky. Check our calendar of activities to see what has been planned so far for this year. |
